One of the best things about the festive season are Christmas cocktails! Mulled wine is a warming, cheerful drink ideal for those chilly winter evenings, and it’s easy to make at home too. Here’s how to make mulled wine, from our team of cash house buyers in Fort Worth. We can also help you sell your property in 24 hours!
Why is it Called Mulled Wine?
Mulled wine is one of the most ancient drinks around, dating back to the ancient Greeks. Originally called hippocras after Hippocrates (the father of medicine), the Romans soon copied this method of heating wine with spices and called it Conditum Paradoxum. In the Middle Ages, this drink became a wildly popular health beverage, and the name was eventually changed to mulled wine during Victorian times after the process known as “mulling”, which meant “to heat, sweeten and flavor”. Charles Dickens included this drink in his novel, “A Christmas Carol”, after which it became the famous festive season cocktail it is today.
How Alcoholic is Mulled Wine?
This depends on how you make it. A little of the alcohol will burn off as the Christmas cocktail mixture is heated, so most mulled wine has about 8-13% alcohol. You can reduce the alcohol content a bit by cooking it longer, or increase it by cooking the spices and fruit first in some water, then adding the wine and brandy at the last minute, heating it just before serving.
What Red Wine is Best for Making Mulled Wine?
According to sommeliers (the lucky professionals who drink wine for a living!), the best red wine for making mulled wine is a young, unoaked wine that have a heavy, fruity taste and are heavier on the alcohol content – no lite wines here, please! That’s because a portion of the alcohol content will burn off as you heat up the mixture.
You don’t have to spend a lot on wine for this mulled wine recipe – a low to mid-range wine will do just fine. Read the label and look for complementary flavor notes of cinnamon, spices, citrus, pepper and berries.
