On March 11th, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) a pandemic as the number of cases hit over 118,000 worldwide, with at least 85 deaths in the USA alone. It’s a frightening time for everyone, especially those in our community who are elderly, very young or are immunocompromised. At our cash for houses agency in Fort Worth, we put the health and safety of our clients and community first, and would like to share some insights that will help prevent infection, support treatment and – very importantly – take care of our community as a whole.
COVID-19 / Coronavirus Prevention Tips
According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are important measures anyone can take to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, including:
- Understanding how COVID-19 spreads: This virus spreads through person-to-person contact (within 6 feet of one another) via droplets of moisture, usually produced by coughing or sneezing.
- Taking measures to protect yourself: It is recommended that you wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time. Remember to wash your hands after using public transport, being in a public space, and before preparing any food. If you don’t have soap and water readily available, use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. At all times, avoid touching your face, especially your nose, eyes and mouth.
- Clean and disinfect: Take more measures than normal to sanitize your home, cleaning off frequently touched surfaces daily. These include doorknobs, light switches, phones, keyboards, facets, toilets and sinks. You can make your own home disinfectant using 5 tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water, or use manufactured disinfectants that are EPA-registered for emerging viral pathogens.
- Practice social distancing wherever possible: Avoid close contact with anyone exhibiting symptoms of illness, and avoid close contact with all other people in general. Try to stay 6 feet away from others, avoid physical contact with any vulnerable persons, and try to avoid any social gatherings. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, not your hands, and throw all used tissues into the trash – remember to wash your hands thoroughly after as well. Work from home if possible.
- Protect your community: If you are feeling under the weather for any reason, stay at home and avoid others. If you have to go out, wear a facemask. If you are experiencing symptoms that include fever, coughing, sore throat or shortness of breath, do not visit a medical facility. Instead, phone your medical facility directly and tell them about your symptoms and they can give you instructions for how treatment will proceed.
How You Can Help Your Community
While self-isolation and social distancing are very important to flattening the curve, slowing the spread of the virus and preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed, it is also a time where we all need to do our best to support our community. There are a few great ways that you can help without putting others or yourself at risk. This includes:
- Donating to your local food bank: Donations to food banks are dropping as businesses and organizations close to prevent the spread of the virus. You can find your local food bank here and help keep these critical organizations up and running.
- Check in on your neighbors: If you have neighbors who are vulnerable (for example, the elderly, immunocompromised, people who have additional illnesses like cancer, or families who are struggling because they cannot work), you can help them out too. Give them a call or customize this template to what you can offer, print it out and slip it under their door (remember to wash your hands first!), then collect it the next day. Remember to practice the hygiene measures mentioned above to make sure you are safe while you run errands.
- Support small businesses: While this is a health pandemic, it is already having a severe effect on small local businesses as their clients self-isolate and demand for their services drops. People are worried they will have no jobs to go back to, and businesses are worried they will have to close their doors permanently. Check on your local favorites to see if they have accounts set up to support their employees, and see if you can support them during this time. Tip food delivery services well, keep memberships running and remember – have all delivered goods dropped at outside your door so that you do not put yourself or your delivery person at risk of the virus.
Stay well, stay safe and look after yourselves!
